Goodbye, friend. Mr Robot season 4 will be the last…

The dark and spacious world of Mr Robot will be collapsing in on itself one final time with the upcoming fourth season. Sam Esmail and his band of writers are fleshing out a surreal new trip for fractured computer whizz Elliot Alderson, with star Rami Malek confirmed to return to the endlessly fascinating dystopian hacker series.

Mr Robot season 4 plot

Series creator Esmail has been chatting about season 4 at the Tribeca festival (via Deadline) and it appears that the entire season is going to take place over one Christmas, in a sorta-homage to the UK tradition of Yuletide specials:

“Is anybody here a fan of British television?” he asked the audience gathered at Tribeca’s Mr. Robot panel. “Typically how [British shows] wrap up series, like the British [version of The] Office, you tend to do a Christmas special. So the final season of Mr. Robot is one very long Christmas special that will last about a week over Christmas of 2015.”

Star Rami Malek then added mysteriously, “I think it’s going to come to a phenomenal end. But I obviously can’t say how.”

Esmail confirmed the conclusion of the series last year:

“When I first created the world of Mr. Robot, I thought it would be a niche television series with a small, cult following. Over the past three years, it has become so much more, and I am continually humbled by the show’s recognition and by the amazing cast and crew that work tirelessly to help bring my vision to life,” Esmail said in a statement. “Since day one, I’ve been building toward one conclusion — and in breaking the next season of Mr. Robot, I have decided that conclusion is finally here. Everyone on the creative team, including the amazing people at USA and UCP, didn’t want to say goodbye, but we ultimately have too much respect for Elliot’s journey to extend past its inevitable ending. Therefore, season four will serve as the final chapter of the Mr. Robot story. To fans of the show: thank you for the past three years, and I can’t wait to share this exciting final season with you.”

It’s not all bad news, however, as season 4 has been bumped up from eight episodes to twelve, ensuring that the cast and crew can give us a proper swansong for the beloved series.
