We are our own worst enemies in our first look at horror movie Us from the director of Get Out

What could be scarier than being stalked by yourself? The first trailer for Jordan Peele’s new horror movie Us has arrived to really ruin your family Christmas – beware, it’s super creepy.

Starring Winston Duke, Lupita Nyong’o and Elisabeth Moss, Us sees a family retreating to a beach house for a holiday break where they find themselves terrorised by a group of people who look exactly like them.

From the trailer this looks like a smart twist on the home-invasion subgenre, as the alt-family turn up at the house to scare the crap out of their counterparts.

Could there be a supernatural element? A sci-fi twist? Something to do with cloning (hence the multiple shots of what look like lab rabbits)? It’s not clear yet, but was is apparent is this is definitely going to be out and out horror.

In an intro Jordan Peele gave at a London preview screening of the trailer he said his intention was to “scare the pants” off audiences and create a new horror mythology with a new monster. Though he said it was important to him that there’s a black family at the centre of the film, Peele said the movie is “not about race” and focuses on “the undeniable truth for everyone that we are our own worst enemy”.

Peele’s directorial debut Get Out, which came out in 2017, was a huge box office success and got wide acclaim (including an Oscar for for Peele for Best Original Screenplay). Following its success Peele said he planned to make a series of ‘social thrillers’ which would include Us.

Us is produced by Jason Blum, who also worked with Peele on Get Out

Us opens in UK cinemas on 15 March.
