The table read for the first episode has some very familiar faces…

A second revival for Veronica Mars is now officially a reality. Hulu secured a deal to become the streaming home for the series, and is reuniting series creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell for a short run of new episodes.

Past seasons of Veronica Mars will begin streaming on the platform in the summer of 2019, and the new episodes will also premiere sometime next year. Kristen Bell is executive producing the series and will reprise her role as Veronica Mars, with series creator Rob Thomas writing the first episode.

Thomas has shared a behind the scenes image of the cast gathering for a table read of the first episode over on Twitter…

In the post, he reassured fans that even though these actors preparing to appear in the first episode – Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, Enrico Colantoni, Percy Daggs III, Daran Norris and David Starzyk, along with new cast members Dawnn Lewis, Izabela Vidovic, Clifton Collins Jr. and Patton Oswalt – are shown in the image, there’s still time for other Veronica Mars faves to emerge later.

Bell recently had a chit-chat with Sirius FM (via CBR) about what we can expect when the series returns, and it definitely sounds like we’ll be getting a more grown up show with a larger scope.

“It’s gonna be a much darker world,” the Good Place actress noted. “It’s going to be a bigger world. It’s definitely not going to be what we did on UPN or The CW, so I want to brace fans for that. That it’s going to be darker and bigger and more cinematic and definitely a little bit different.”

The teen detective was a new, strong-but-complex female lead that young people could relate to in 2004, with Buffy having just wound up its run in 03, even featuring fan of the show Joss Whedon in a cameo role.

“I love that Veronica is a superhero without a cape,” Bell said. “I love that people have looked to her in times that they were down in their life, and felt like she was fighting for them. It was a resonant show for people because… kids still come up to me and are like ‘I got through high school watching that show.’”

We’ll bring you all the updates as we get them!

Veronica Mars revival returning cast members

Thomas has confirmed that some beloved characters from both the series and movie will be returning to this new Hulu run…

Veronica Mars revival new characters

That Hashtag Show has acquired some new character breakdowns for the revival, which seems to reveal that things are pressing ahead fairly quickly, in fact! The site is usually pretty reliable for this sort of thing, so we were all over this news like a dog on hot chips.

Here’s a list of the new characters being cast in the new season of Veronica Mars, then, according to THS:

MOHD AL-THANI

A recurring guest star who is a Middle Eastern or Asian man in his 50’s to 60’s. Al-Thani is a wealthy, well-educated man who hires Mars Investigations to find the person responsible for disfiguring his son. He solves all of his problems with money and fears the attack was a message for him.

LOLA AL-THANI

A recurring guest star who is a Middle Eastern or Asian woman in her 50’s to 60’s. Lola Al-Thani is Mohd’s wife and like her husband is wealthy, well-educated, and entitled. She also believes money can solve everything and that her son may have been attacked because of his parents.

ALIYAH GWINN

A recurring guest star who is an African-American woman in her 30’s to early 40’s. Sexy but cynical, Aliyah owns a popular nightclub for Spring Breakers. Veronica thinks the club is the connection to a series of Spring Break killings.

SHERIFF MARCIA LANGDON

A recurring guest star who is an African-American woman in her 50’s to 60’s. Langdon has a tough reputation and finally cleaned out the corruption plaguing Neptune’s police department. However, she is extremely ambitious and is eyeing a bigger and better job in LA County. So, she plans on moving soon.

ALONZO LOZANO

A recurring guest star who is a man in his mid-30’s to mid-40’s. Alonzo is a Mexican cartel hitman who comes to Neptune to find and kill the person who killed his boss’s wife’s nephew. He finds love in the beach town and starts to rethink his career.

DODIE MENDOZA

A recurring guest star who is a man between 50 and 70 years old. Mendoza is Alonzo’s partner and is looking forward to retirement. Alonzo annoys him by not staying focused on the job.

HARVEY MOON

A recurring guest star who is a man in his 40’s. A talkative pizza delivery guy who loves true crime. Unlucky, but still easygoing, Harvey will take any fame he can get.

CLYDE PRICKETT

A recurring guest star who is a man between 40 and 60 years old. Prickett is an ex-con that protected a rich real estate developer Big Dick Casablancas in prison. Now, he is Big Dick’s fixer. But in reality, he is cleverer and more dangerous than his boss, with a network of ex-cons to do his dirty work.

Trying not to get too excited and failing miserably over here at Den Of Geek. We lost the plot just seeing the name ‘Big Dick Casablancas’ there!

Veronica Mars revival story

Hulu also released the logline for the new season:

Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.

Thomas laid out a little of what we can expect from this new series on Twitter, too…

Veronica Mars revival development

Bell currently stars on NBC’s The Good Place, but it’s believed that her work on that series will not conflict. The actress has a clause in her Good Place contract that has prevented the series from being picked up for more than 13 episodes.

Veronica Mars ran for three seasons and 64 episodes. Seasons one and two ran on UPN and the third season aired on the rebranded CW, ending its run in 2007. Bell starred as a high school student who becomes a private investigator with the help of her detective father.

The series earned a cult following and fan support lead to Kickstarter funding of a movie revival in 2014, raising $5.7 million for the production. The film, set nine years after the events of the third season, had a limited release, earning just $3.5 million at the box office. Most of the original cast returned for the feature film.
