Back in June, word first arrived that CBS had gone shopping for more Star Trek. Now, it’s confirmed that a new animated Star Trek series is indeed on its way.
CBS has ordered two seasons of Star Trek: Lower Decks, a half-hour animated comedy from one of the Rick And Morty team, Mike McMahan. As reported by Collider, “the series will focus on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships.”
Producer Alex Kurtzman recalled McMahan’s winning pitch as having been, “I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end.”
Kurtzman, who’ll be producing alongside Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Katie Krentz and Aaron Baiers, was full of praise for McMahan in the official press bumf, saying that Mike “writes with the pure, joyful heart of a true fan. As we broaden the world of ‘Trek’ to fans of all ages, we’re so excited to include Mike’s extraordinary voice.”
McMahan promises that the show, despite the half-hour animated format, will be “undeniably ‘Trek'”.
“And,” he adds, “I promise not to add an episode at the very end that reveals the whole thing took place in a training program.”
We’ll bring you voice cast news and more as it arrives.
