We now know that How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World will be the final chapter in the series, with Hiccup and Toothless saying goodbye in what’s bound to be an incredibly upsetting end to a fantastic animated trilogy.
Before we get the hankies ready though, we’ve still got a few months left to look forward to the film – and the new trailer sets things up nicely with a closer look at what to expect. Unfortunately, it also makes it look even sadder than we expected. Toothless has a girlfriend to live with now, sure, but that tearful goodbye shot on the cliff is already stinging…
Hiccup is now the chief of Berk, but there’s clearly still a lot of loose ends to tie up after the slightly grim ending of How To Train Your Dragon 2. Berk has become a sanctuary for the Vikings and dragons to live side by side, but that’s clearly been thrown out the window again in the final film – with the promise of the mythical “hidden world” now the only chance Hiccup has of saving Toothless and the others.
Getting to the hidden world only seems to be half the battle though, and the fact that it’s only dragons that can live there suggests that we’re in for a pretty emotional finale.
“We thought about it for a long time and came up with what we think is a bittersweet way to say goodbye to these characters, but the right way,” director Dean DeBlois told the audience (via Entertainment Weekly). “The film is about letting go, or finding the wisdom to let go, rather”.
How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World opens on 1st of February, 2019. Check out the film’s first trailer below.
