Lodge 49 s eason 2 was not inevitable.
Despite having a solid Better Call Saul lead-in, Lodge 49 was a real risky proposition for AMC. The first season of the show was about as experimental as TV show offerings can get. It came from longtime fiction writer yet TV novice, Jim Gavin. It featured a rising star in Wyatt Russell and relative unknown Brent Jennings. It was a quirky, light-hearted comedy, but also danced around the edges of some real mystical stuff. Today, however, that initial risk pays off for AMC as the network has announced that it was renewed Lodge 49 for season 2.
“Lodge 49 tells a funny, wise and meaningful story that immediately and deeply resonated with critics and viewers alike,” AMC President of programming David Madden said in a statement. “With a talented cast including Wyatt Russell, Brent Jennings and Sonya Cassidy, along with our strong creative team led by Jim Gavin and Peter Ocko, we are particularly proud of this series from both an AMC network and AMC Studios perspective and are looking forward to a return trip to the ‘Lodge.’”
Described as a “modern fable,” Lodge 49 follows Californian surfer bro, Dud (Russell), as he tries to get his life together following the death of his father and a mysterious snake bite he sustained in South America. Dud’s path for meaning and community takes him to Lodge 49 of the Fraternal Order of the Lynx. Lodge 49 is a Freemason-esque secret society with a complicated, otherworldly mythology – but it also just turns out to be a solid place for working class beach folk to hang out and drink beer.
“I feel so lucky to be working with AMC, which has shown such faith in Lodge 49, and I can’t wait to jump back in with our amazing cast,” Gavin said of the renewal.
Gavin created and writes Lodge 49. Peter Ocko serves as showrunner with Dan Carey, Jeff Freilich, and Paul Giamatti serving as producers.
