Indie space movie Prospect tells us why greed is bad

Prospect premiered back in March at SXSW, where it picked up great reviews for its inventiveness and universe-building. A quote from Variety’s review even said, “this is what the standalone Star Wars movies should feel like,” which should make pretty much everyone take notice.

Directors/writers Chris Caldwell and Zeek Earl adapted their own 2014 short film of the same name into the feature, which basically pits a bunch of space miners against each other in a sci-fi twist on gold rush classics like The Treasure Of Sierra Madre. Watch the trailer below but, be warned, it’s one of those annoying ones that pretty much shows the whole film.

The film centers on space-traveling father/daughter duo Ezra (Pedro Pascal) and Cee (Sophie Thatcher), who have headed out to a toxic forest on an alien moon with designs to get rich by mining a type of gem that – apropos to gold’s period table designation – is called “aurelac” (at least it’s not called “unobtainium”…) However, just like in any classic Gold Rush story, greed becomes the real enemy, as an encounter with another group sends Ezra and Cee’s relationship down a dark path.

This is an intersting starring role for Pascal who has been working his way up various cast lists reccently. The former Game Of Thrones actor is coming off movie appearances in The Equalizer 2 and Kingsman: The Golden Circle and will have a major role in Wonder Woman 1984. He is joined by onscreen daughter Sophie Thatcher, a newcomer, who recently fielded TV runs on Chicago Med and The Exorcist. Joining them in the cast are names such as Jay Duplass, Andre Royo and Sheila Vand.

Prospect is expected to hit cinemas before the end of the year, but the film is being dangled as a major movie carrot for a new US sci-fi-centric streaming service from SingularDTV, called DUST, on which it will sit in 2019 after the theatrical run.
