Director Jon M. Chu plans to return for China Rich Girlfriend

Warner Bros. would be silly not to make a Crazy Rich Asians sequel. Not only has the rom-com made an impressive $35.3 million in its first five days in American theatres, but it also seems to be changing the face of Hollywood in the process. It’s also pretty handy that there are two more books in the Kevin Kwan series on which the film is based just waiting to be adapted.

According to THR, while the sequel has not yet been officially greenlit by Warner Bros., director Jon M. Chu is planning on returning for a follow-up, with producers Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and John Penotti, as well as screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim set to return as the studio moves forward with development. Chu has a film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights on the docket (as well as a rumoured Thai cave rescue movie) before returning to the world of Crazy Rich Asians, and Warner Bros. has the option for all three books in the trilogy.

The second book is called China Rich Girlfriends and follows Nick’s cousin Astrid (Gemma Chan, in the film) as she reconnects with her first love Charlie Wu (Harry Shum Jr.). The book also follows Rachel (Constance Wu) and Nick (Henry Golding) as they go to China to find Rachel’s father.

We have to wait until 14 September to see the first film over here in the UK, by which time the sequel will likely already be well underway.
