A while ago, we heard that Oscar winner Hilary Swank was teaming up with first time director Grant Sputore for a brand new horror film called I Am Mother. We were curious, because Swank’s previous forays into the horror genre weren’t exactly…good, for the most part. The Gift was solid enough with Sam Raimi at the helm, and The Reaping and The Resident both initially looked promising, but didn’t ultimately make the grade, so it was interesting to us that the actress had chosen to dip her toe back into the scream queen water some years later, especially with an unproven director at the helm.
We’ve now learned a bit more about the forthcoming frightener thanks to the team over at Bloody Disgusting, who have a synopsis and some exclusive pics from the film. They remark that it all seems a bit like 10 Cloverfield Lane with an evil robot and, well, it’s hard to disagree with them.
Take a look at the film’s plot below…
“I Am Mother portrays a teenage girl (Rugaard) raised underground by a robot mother designed to repopulate the earth following an extinction event. Their unique bond is threatened when a blood-drenched stranger, played by Swank, is taken in by the teen, only to find herself at odds with her gear-and-piston parent. Overnight, the stranger casts doubt on Mother’s claims about the outside world and begins to unravel the fabric of their insular family. Unsure whom to trust, the girl begins to probe into Mother’s dubious nature and uncovers the truth of her greater mission.”
And here are the first images…

Counterpoint, though: isn’t basically every film improved by adding a killer robot? Even something like 10 Cloverfield Lane? Maybe it’s our “children of the 80s” brains talking here, to be fair.
More as we get it, of course, including a trailer for this weirdly enticing movie.
