The Simpsons are coming back to the big screen. 11 years after The Simpsons Movie gave us Spider-Pig, Fox have green-lit a sequel (that’s almost sure to include more Spider-Pig).
According to The Wall Street Journal, the studio has announced plans for a Simpsons sequel – alongside new a new animated film for Bob’s Burgers and a live-action hybrid Family Guy movie.
The original Simpsons movie was a huge hit back in 2007, making over $527 million worldwide and giving the TV series a much needed shot of energy and fresh ideas. 11 years later, the show is nearing its 30th season and even some of the cast and crew have started grumbling that it’s not as good as it used to be. Could the new film jolt it back into life again?
More importantly, what’s the film actually going to be about? After 639 episodes (and counting) is there anything left for Homer and Bart to do? Whilst everyone wants to hear the Spider-Pig song again, the last thing we need is a lazy sequel that re-hashes the same jokes. Could the film even act as the much rumoured, always denied, “end of The Simpsons”?
