Disney’s latest live action fairy tale looks like a really, really expensive snow globe

Disney have launched the first full trailer for their starry, snowy new fairy tale, The Nutcracker And The Four Realms.

Cynics will say it looks like an exact cross between the box office smash, Alice In Wonderland, the box office smash, Frozen, and the box office smash, Beauty And The Beast (with a Harry Potter owl and a few Greatest Showman songs thrown in for good measure) – but it also looks like a perfectly lovely family Christmas movie.

The film is an adaptation of the E.T.A. Hoffman fairy tale, The Nutcracker And The Mouse King, although a lot of the original story seems to have been lost in translation. Mackenzie Foy stars as a girl named Clara who gets given a golden thread for Christmas by her godfather (Morgan Freeman), eventually leading to a key that unlocks the door to a magic snowy realm full of clockwork soldiers, ballet dancers, sugar plum fairies (Keira Knightley) and evil witches (Helen Mirren).

Lasse Hallström directed most of the film, but Joe Johnston stepped in for (ominous sounding) reshoots and post-production work. Judging by the trailer though, the film is looking pretty polished already.

The Nutcracker And The Four Realms opens on November 2.
