One could safely assume that The Romanoffs would be the next project from The Americans creators Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, since they seem to have a good handle on their Russian history. One would be wrong.
Instead, The Romanoffs is the next offering from the creator of a different classic cable TV drama. Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner has chosen the project to be his official TV follow-up to his multiple Emmy award-winning cultural atom bomb, Mad Men.
The Romanoffs will sort of be about the powerful, dynastic Russian House of Romanov, who ruled Russia in some capacity or another from 1613 through the abdication of Tsar Nicholas in 1917. Instead of being a historical drama about the family, however, it’ll actually be an anthology series set in the present day about many strange individuals whose only connection is the shared belief that they’re descended from the Romanov dynasty.
The Romanoffs trailer
The first trailer for The Romanoffs was released by Amazon Studios during their presentation at the TCA summer tour. There isn’t any footage from the series to speak of. It may be more appropriate to put this trailer down in the cast section, since it’s just a listing of who will appear on the show! Still, when your cast is as strong as this one, perhaps its more powerful to merely list them out rather than providing any new footage.
The Romanoffs cast
When you create one of TV’s best ever dramas in Mad Men, a lot of people want to work with you. That’s the position that Matthew Weiner finds himself in and he’s clearly made the best of it. The Romanoffs, being an anthology, has the opportunity for a truly massive, impressive cast.
The cast includes *takes deep breath*:
Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), John Slattery (Mad Men), Amanda Peet (Brockmire), Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight), Marthe Keller (Marathon Man), Diane Lane (Unfaithful), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Corey Stoll (The Strain), Andrew Rannells (Girls), Noah Wyle (E.R.), Kathryn Hahn (Afternoon Delight), Kerry Bishé (Halt and Catch Fire), Jay R.
