It's definite: we're getting a new RoboCop sequel, entitled RoboCop Returns. District 9's Neill Blomkamp is set to direct…

It’s been some time now since director Neill Blomkamp posted his concept art online for a proposed Alien 5, a film that 20th Century Fox opted not to make, favouring Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant project instead. Since then, Blomkamp’s Alien movie has fizzled out, in spite of the fan enthusiasm towards it.

However, news now reaches us that Blomkamp instead is to tackle another beloved franchise: he’s going to be making the next RoboCop film, a project whose existence first came to light earlier this year.

Justin Rhodes (who’s also written the next Terminator movie) is working a screenplay from original RoboCop writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner. It’s called RoboCop Returns, but what’s not clear is whether it’ll follow the original movies, the 2014 reboot, or start entirely afresh. A report earlier in the year suggested that this would be a continuation of the first movie, though, and the title of the film certainly plays to that.

Nonetheless, it’s an interesting union of filmmaker and project, this, and we can’t help but be optimistic for the film. As we learn more, we will, of course, let you know.
