Brad Bird's The Incredibles 2 smashes the opening weekend record for an animated movie…

Disney had yet another stellar weekend at the US box office, this time courtesty of Pixar.

The long-awaited, and much-anticipated, sequel to Brad Bird’s The Incredibles delivered an astounding opening weekend. The Incredibles 2 grossed some $180m in its opening bow, toppling even Captain America: Civil War and becoming one of the top ten openings of all time.

Brad Bird wrote and directed the sequel, and he now has to his name the largest opening ever at the US box office. A further $51.5m was added outside the US, although the film has only opened in around a quarter of territories. The World Cup and differing school holiday times account for that. In the UK, for instance, we don’t get the movie until next month.

Competition will be stiff for The Incredibles in the US next week, as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom finally opens in America. But still, The Incredibles 2 is expected to keep brining in the cash as well…
