Nintendo's biggest brawler hits the Switch. Here's the first trailer for Super Smash Bros Ultimate…

For years now, the Super Smash Bros games have been helping us answer some of those age-old questions: who would win in a fight between Kirby and Samus Aran? Does Mario have a better upper cut than Solid Snake?

This autumn, we’ll be able to answer those questions and more as the franchise makes a not-unexpected debut on the Nintendo Switch. If you’ve played any of the previous titles, Super Smash Bros Ultimate is more of the same: a chaotic yet addictive fighting game featuring some of the console’s most famous characters – and a few obscure ones added to the mix, too.

As the debut trailer says, “Everyone is here”: Captain Olimar from the Pikmin series, Doctor Mario, Kid Icarus, Toon Link, Little Mac, Pac-Man, plus a whole stadium load of Pokemon, including Lucario and the diminutive Pichu. Oh, and Ridley from the Metroid franchise will also make his debut – he even gets his own reveal trailer, which you can also find below.

It’s a startlingly vast roster, that’s for sure, but what we’re most interested in seeing is how well the online multiplayer will be integrated on the Switch. Previous editions were somewhat awkward in the match-making department, but with Nintendo set to launch its online service later this year, we’re hoping Super Smash Bros will provide the smooth, painless experience we’ve been waiting for.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate launches on the 7th December.
