The long-awaited Resident Evil 2 remake finally arrives in 2019…

The rumours are true. Capcom is finally ready to reveal a remaster of the all-time horror classic, Resident Evil 2

As shown during Sony’s E3 2018 press conference, the Resident Evil 2 remake is much more than a new coat of paint, a few features, and fixes to the original game’s janky camera system. This is a complete and total remake of the original title that actually looks better than most modern games. If the footage is to be believed, the amount of work that went into this remake is on par with the work that went into the original Resident Evil remake, and that game is considered to be the best remake ever made.

Unfortunately, we’re going to have to speculate a bit regarding the remake’s finer gameplay details, as the trailer was largely a cinematic affair that Capcom and Sony did not elaborate on. However, it appears that the game will utilize an over-the-camera system similar to what we saw in Resident Evil 4 and 5. However, it’s possible that the system has been tweaked in some way to accommodate for improvements or even just the highly cinematic nature of the original Resident Evil 2 camera system.

Story-wise, we do see quite a few familiar faces and locations in the Resident Evil 2 remake trailer. Leon Kennedy is there, the lickers are back and deadlier than ever, and there’s even a brief look at the fabled Raccoon City police station. That last one seems to indicate that this game will echo some of the major story beats of the original Resident Evil 2, but it’s hard to say for sure how closely this game will follow the plot of the original. Also missing in action is Claire Redfield, but we’d be shocked if she doesn’t make her way into the final version.

In any case, the Resident Evil 2 remake looks like it’s going to be worth the unbelievably long wait. We never thought we’d catch ourselves saying that, but here we are.

Resident Evil 2 Remake is set to launch on January 25, 2019. There’s no word on whether or not it will be a PlayStation exclusive.
