The Sons Of Anarchy spin-off Mayans MC is one step closer to being a reality for us all. After FX ordered a pilot for the show created by Kurt Sutter (which ultimately had to be re-shot), things are now moving along rapidly.
Here’s a brand new teaser…
You’d think that FX would use this occasion to drop a proper release date, but unfortunately not – “This Fall,” (autumn to us UK viewers) is still the billed timeframe.
Mayans MC development
Mayans MC has received a solid stretch of road on which to ride, since the network has officially given the project a 10-episode debut season order, unveiling the first official image of the cast (pictured above).
With FX’s Presidents of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Production, Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, making the announcement, the network conveyed sentiments on the auspicious prospects of continuing the continuity established by the 7-year run of SOA, with original visionary Kurt Sutter onboard, along with Low Riders director Elgin James. According to Grad:
“Kurt Sutter is a master storyteller and Mayans MC has the raw energy and intensity that are hallmarks of his signature style. Thanks to Kurt, co-creator Elgin James and this amazing cast, Mayans MC builds on the legacy of Sons Of Anarchy, taking it in a thrilling new direction that we can’t wait for the world to see.”
Mayans MC release date
The plan by FX is to have Mayans MC ready to premiere by autumn 2018.
Mayans MC cast
Edward James Olmos will be a series regular (Battlestar Gallactica), playing Felipe Reyes, “the once-strong Mexican patriarch, crushed by bullets and hard labour, who struggles to keep his past buried and lead his sons down a lawful, righteous path.”
Joining Olmos in the Mayans MC cast are:
JD Pardo, Sarah Bolger, Clayton Cardenas, Richard Cabral, Michael Irby, Raoul Trujillo, Antonio Jaramillo and Carla Baratta.
Mayans MC story
According to a release, the show is “set in a post Jax Teller world, where EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the Cali/Mexi border, struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel, and his need for respect from the women he loves.”
High-profile spin-offs have come a long way from when NBC’s beloved sitcom Friends gave way to the critically panned Joey. AMC set its programming slate for the long haul in 2014, successfully turning Breaking Bad into Better Call Saul and using The Walking Dead as a jumping off point for Fear The Walking Dead. Whether it’s a prequel using existing characters, or a new story in the same universe, “spin-off” doesn’t carry the same negative connotation it once did.
Seeing success elsewhere, it’s easy to see why FX is entertaining the idea of building off one of its most celebrated shows. This spin-off follows the Mayans motorcycle crew and is set in the Northern California motorcycle club scene.
Sons Of Anarchy ended after seven seasons December 2014. The seventh season was the highest-rated in FX history, averaging 7.55 million viewers.
