Roisin Conaty’s GameFace is excellent – clever, weird, imaginative, honest, poignant, and very funny. News then, that Channel 4 has renewed it for a second series, comes as very welcome indeed.
GameFace is the story of Marcella (Conaty), an aspiring actor who’s struggling with her career, family, the breakdown of her long-term relationship, and… with herself in general. It started life as a pilot back in 2014, which was rescripted and partly recast in time for last year’s series one premiere on E4.
Series one introduced us to Marcella’s life through flashback and fantasy sequences during sessions with a life-coach (Karl Theobald), and driving lessons with her instructor Jon (Damien Molony). The cast was great, and featured among others Cardinal Burns‘ Dustin Demri-Burns as Marcella’s ex, with Father Ted‘s Pauline McLynn as her mum.
It’s a little bit Spaced, and a lot Roisin Conaty – clever, rude and hugely entertaining. If you’ve yet to have the pleasure, all six episodes are currently available on All4, giving you plenty of time to catch up before series two arrives on Channel 4.
More news on that as it arrives.
