We love a good heist thriller, and given it’s the next film from acclaimed filmmaker Steve McQueen (Hunger, Shame, 12 Years A Slave), we’re really looking forward to Widows.
It stars Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki and Cynthia Erivo as a group of women who aim to pull off the heist their spouses failed to pull off; also among the cast you’ll find Liam Neeson, Jon Bernthal, Daniel Kaluuya, Robert Duvall and Jacki Weaver. That’s a pretty stunning line-up, we’re sure you’ll agree. And if the premise sounds familiar, that’s because it’s essentially an adaptation of a 1980s TV series of the same name, written by Lynda La Plante.
This time around, Gillian Flynn (who wrote the sizzling Gone Girl) has penned the adapted screenplay, and by the looks of things, the hair on the lead characters is far less voluminous than it was about 35 years ago, while the action’s been kicked up a notch.
Steve McQueen’s previous movies were great to look at and full of sterling performances; we’re excited, then, to see what he does with this kind of genre material.
Widows is out in UK cinemas on the 9th November.
