Since the news of Lucifer’s surprise cancellation was revealed, fans have been rallying around the show in an attempt to get it saved by another network or streaming platform.
The support has been so impressive that the cast have also joined the movement, and star Tom Ellis took the opportunity at MCM Comic-Con this weekend to thank viewers who were working so hard to gather support.
Ellis kicked off by addressing the elephant in the room, saying: “When I found out the show was cancelled, I was gutted, but when the news was came out, I was instantly not gutted from the reaction. The #SaveLucifer [campaign] has picked me and the cast up from the floor and we’re all determined to save the show.
“Conversations have started happening as a result of the news that you guys have been making, so thank you,” he confirmed.
The actor told the audience that he was unable to answer any questions about the fate of the show, which indicates that there may be interested parties looking to pick it up for a fourth season.
Rachael Harris popped in with a video recording during the panel, and said: “I have no idea what the fate of our show is, but I do know that if we have a second chance to do this show, it’s because of you all – the fans. Your commitment and passion for our show is unmatched and we really do see it. We’re extraordinarily grateful for your passion and your kind words about all of the characters.”
Though an eleventh hour save for Lucifer would not be unprecedented (Timeless was famously uncancelled last season, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine was picked up by NBC after being dropped by FOX), but the time that has passed would make it unusual.
On the season finale cliffhanger, Ellis added: “The final moment has been a long time coming, but it wasn’t planned as the final moment of Lucifer. If it is, which I sincerely hope it isn’t, what a way to go.”
