This is an odd one. The brilliant 2004 movie, Friday Night Lights, never set the box office alight, but it certainly had notable ramifications. For one, it helped launched the directing career of Peter Berg. But then it also inspired the equally excellent TV series of the same name.
Oddly, though, Universal is now looking to go back to the source and start again. Based on H G Bissinger’s book, the studio had been looking for a sequel idea, but has now decided to press ahead with something of a reboot. They’ll be new characters and a different setting.
Furthermore, it’s recruited a director.
David Gordon Green, who’s made films as varied as Stronger, George Washington, Your Highness and the upcoming Halloween reboot, is now reported to be in talks for the job. Robert Schenkkan, of Hacksaw Ridge vintage, has written the script. There’s no word yet on how soon Universal would want to press ahead with the project.
More on this one as we hear it…
