Prepare for a return visit to the murky but glamorous world of global organised crime in series two of McMafia, which has been officially renewed by the BBC.
Based on former BBC international correspondant Misha Glenny’s bestselling book of the same name, the first series was a huge hit both on BBC One and iPlayer earlier this year, and recently concluded its US run on AMC.
McMafia is written by Hossein Amini and James Watkins, and stars Happy Valley‘s James Norton as Alex Godman, the British-raised son of a Russian mafia boss. Series one charted Alex’s descent into the family business, lured in by the big money and glamorous lifestyle.
According to itswriters, McMafia series two promises to “cast more light on the shady intersections of transnational criminals and their enablers in finance, law, intelligence agencies and even” perish the thought, “in governments.”
BBC Drama Controller Piers Wenger praised the first series for its “blend of topicality and killer storytelling,” noting that the drama “significantly added to the discourse around Anglo-Russian relations.” After recent events in Salisbury, that discourse is as vital as ever.
