Nine years after its release, Noel Clarke reveals that his box office topping movie, Adulthood, is only now earning him royalties.

If you’re looking for insight into just how the movie business works, then consider Noel Clarke’s box office hit, Adulthood. The film is the middle part of the Hood trilogy, and marked Clarke’s feature debut as a director. He also penned the script, and took a lead role in the film.

It was a hit, too. The movie got to number one at the box office in the UK, grossing over £3m on its UK cinema release in 2008. It’s been a good seller on disc since, too, as well as notching up regularly TV showings.

The low budget movie, though, has apparently only just now hit the financial targets required for Clarke to get royalties from its success. It’s taken nearly a decade to get there. It brings to mind the accounting of the original The Italian Job movie, where a Paramount Pictures statement of account suggested the film was bizarrely still in the red, some 30 years after its release.

The exact studio accounting behind Adulthood’s numbers hasn’t been released, of course. But here’s Clarke’s Tweet.

The Hood boxset is available now.
