Steve Coogan and John C Reilly make a fine looking mess

Steve Coogan and John C Reilly’s Laurel and Hardy biopic has landed its first full trailer ahead of the film’s premiere at the London Film Festival on October 21st

Focusing on the comedy duo’s fraught final tour, Stan & Ollie shows us a different side to the legendary Hollywood clowns – bickering, tired and full of regret before reconciling after a lifetime of working together.

Laurel and Hardy’s legacy is almost untouchable, but it looks like Reilly and Coogan have more than done them proud with two uncanny performances that already look like they’re going to clean up during the next awards season. Shirley Henderson and Danny Huston co-star, with filming mostly taking place in Dudley and Bristol as the film follows the duo on the UK leg of their tour.

The film is directed by John S Baird, (best known for 2013’s underrated gem, Filth), and written by Jeff Pope, who worked with Coogan on 2013’s Oscar-nominated Philomena.

“I am aware of the huge responsibility of bringing their characters to life, but I have not treated the boys with kid gloves or looked at them through rose-coloured specs,” Pope told The Telegraph. “They are living and breathing characters, with flaws and shortcomings. The research into this story threw up so many details and facts that I had no idea about. But everything I have done has come from a place of love and more than anything else I hope this shines through.”

Check out Stan & Ollie when it opens nationwide on January 11th.
