The hunt for someone to steer Suicide Squad 2 may be nearly over. The sequel to last year’s commercial success (although hardly a critical one) has been on the lookout for a director, since it became clear that the man who steered the original film, David Ayer, was instead set to focus on Gotham City Sirens, a DC movie centered on female villains.
Suicide Squad 2 had been linked with Mel Gibson as a potential director, but when production was pushed back to get a new draft of the screenplay in place, Gibson’s interest in directing the film waned.
Instead, Warner Bros is now homing in on Jaume Collet-Serra, who last year scored a hit with shark flick The Shallows. He’s also directed several Liam Neeson-headlined features, Non-Stop, Unknown, Run All Night and the incoming The Commuter.
Warner Bros wants to get Suicide Squad 2 filming in the middle of 2018, and whilst Collet-Serra has commitments to the TV drama Waco, he’s now the clear running favourite for the job.
More as we hear it.
