DC's new streaming service, DC Universe, has announced Stargirl as its seventh original series…

It looks like Courtney Whitmore’s appearance in Legends Of Tomorrow season 2 was something of an audition.

Former DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns announced at his San Diego Comic-Con panel today that Stargirl would be receiving her own TV series on DC’s new on demand streaming service, DC Universe.

Stargirl becomes the seventh DC property to enter the exclusive DC Universe, joining live-action series Titans (which received its first full trailer earlier today), Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing, Metropolis and animated series Harley Quinn, and Young Justice: Outsiders.

The series, titled Stargirl, will follow the character created by Johns, himself, and Lee Moder in 1999 and introduced into the Arrowverse via Legends Of Tomorrow in 2017. Courtney is a high school sophomore who uncovers dark secrets from her family’s past, received Starman’s very useful cosmic staff, and joins the Justice Society of America. The panel produced some patriotic art of our new hero.

Stargirl TV series on the way from DC streaming service

Per a Hollywood Reporter report, the series’ first season will be 13 episodes and premiere in 2019. Johns will write and produce the show through his Mad Ghost Production company. Warner Bros. Television and Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions will produce, meaning this will likely stay within the Arrowverse.

Johns left his position as DC Comics Chief Creative Officer early this year. During his panel, he confirmed that the opportunity to create and run his own show played a role in his departure. Stargirl is a personal story for Johns with the character being based off of his sister who died in the 1996 explosion of TWA Flight 800.

Johns also noted that “It’s about bringing back the legacy of the Justice Society,” meaning that DC’s first superhero team could very well be coming to DC Universe at some point too.

The start date for DC Universe is set for autumn of this year.
