The Last Jedi isn’t even out yet, but thanks to the complexity of the Star Wars universe at Disney-Lucasfilm, work is already well under way on Episode IX.
Due for release in 2019 and directed by Colin Trevorrow, Episode IX will mark as the capstone to the current trilogy of sequels, which means it should tie off the saga of Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren. The movie was initially written by Trevorrow and Derek Connolly – the pair previously worked together on Jurassic World and Safety Not Guaranteed.
Their script is now about to get a rewrite courtesy of British screenwriter Jack Thorne, the mind behind Den Of Geek favourite, The Fades, and the writer of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter And The Cursed Child stage script.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Trevorrow and Connolly’s screenplay needed a “fresh set of eyes”, and so Thorne’s now in place to make the necessary changes. The outlet adds that it isn’t clear whether the rewrite will be a slight polish or a major overhaul.
The start of production’s still a few months away, however – it’s set to begin in January next year – so Thorne has plenty of time to make sure the Force is strong with the franchise’s ninth main installment.
