This unfinished mod combines the best of The Legend Of Zelda and Doom.

A modder his trying to recreate The Legend Of Zelda in Doom.

For the last few years, a modder known as Exkodius has been trying to convert The Legend Of Zelda for NES within the Doom engine. It’s one of those things that probably sounds tough to imagine when you first hear it, but you should try to picture Doom with Legend Of Zelda‘s art style, weapons, items, dungeons, and most everything else.

Fortunately, you don’t have to use your imagination too much as Exkodius has done everyone a favour by uploading the mod’s files to Moddb. Typically a modder only uploads their work to a site like that when they’re actually ready to share the full – or nearly full – version of the project with the world. However, this project is a bit different in that Exkodius doesn’t necessarily intend to actually finish this mod.

“Is this a game? Not at all! And you need to go in knowing this,” writes Exkodius on the mod’s description page. “What this is is a mare testing ground with different graphics, sound and scripts. The only persons this will be useful to are people who want to expand and build upon it. And people who just want to try the concept.”

While Exkodius notes that he might eventually return to this project, he admits that his years working on it have made it clear that he will likely never actually get the chance to finish this mod. Instead, he hopes that someone out there will find some use for the progress he has made thus far. Whether that means finishing the project or just using it as the basis for something new seems to be entirely up to the public.

Even if the mod isn’t finished and may never be finished, the concept itself and the progress that’s been made thus far is undeniably impressive. There’s enough here to show how this concept could actually work and combine the best of two incredible – if distinctly different – video game franchises.
