A huge new mod looks to recreate Fallout 2 in Fallout 4.

A new mod seeks to recreate Fallout 2 using the Fallout 4 engine.

This mod, known as Project Arroyo, was first announced back in December, but it wasn’t until recently that we got our first look at the progress that’s been made. What’s been shown so far most certainly qualifies as very early work, but it’s encouraging nonetheless. So far, the team has managed to recreate the town of Modoc from Fallout 2 and have done a pretty good job of translating the original town’s feel to the Fallout 4 engine. It probably doesn’t hurt that Modoc was an intentionally desolate town.

While the modders have announced that they’re working on Vault City next, they’ve also shared a few shots of some of the weapons and other smaller objects they’ve recreated. Everything shown thus far certainly seems to be true to Fallout 2, but given how much more work there is to do, it’s hard to take this early work as anything but a sign that this project is heading in the right direction.

What’s really impressive, though, is the team’s desire to not just make Fallout 2 look like a modern game, but to make Fallout 4 feel closer to a classic Fallout game. Before they’re done, the Arroyo team intend to add a variety of skills, perks, and NPCs that were featured in the second game in the series. In theory, that should open up Fallout 4’s role-playing options and expand the overall number of character builds.

That’s a good thing, because as we’ve already mentioned, Fallout 4 wasn’t exactly the RPG experience that Fallout fans had been dreaming of. While the game was arguably the most user-friendly Fallout thus far, it lacked many of the role-playing options and elements that put the Fallout series on the map. Along with the failures of Fallout 76, Fallout 4‘s shortcomings have inspired many franchise fans to look towards Obsidian’s Outer Worlds for a Fallout experience more in-line with the original titles and Fallout: New Vegas.

As for Project Arroyo, we wouldn’t expect to see the full version of the mod available anytime soon.
