There's still hope for a third season of Wayward Pines, as M. Night Shyamalan explores new ideas with Fox…

There were plenty of loose ends to tie up at the end of Wayward Pines‘ sophomore season, and although ratings had dipped from the first, it was still averaging 2.4 million viewers, with an uptick at the finale. But over a year on from that finale, season 3 hasn’t come any closer to moving forward.

Fox Entertainment’s David Madden was quizzed about the show’s status by Deadline at TCA this week, and he confirmed that the man behind the bleak horror series – M. Night Shyamalan – had been in touch recently to discuss how they would go about pursuing a third season.

Asked if he thinks season 3 of Wayward Pines will happen, Madden responded thusly:

“We don’t know yet. M. Night has talked to both Dana and me recently about the possibilities of what a third season could be. We are exploring story and casting ideas; we haven’t made any decisions.”

Adapted from the best-selling novels by Blake Crouch, Wayward Pines was never short on ideas, even if the execution of those ideas tended to be hit and miss. A tight third season could surely explore all manner of possibilities left open by season 2.

More as we have it.
