Thor: Ragnarok outpaces Thor: The Dark World at the box office, and gives Marvel another massive hit…

In a movie environment where many companies are struggling to find the recipe for box office gold, Marvel Studios has just smacked another one out of the proverbial park. Thor: Ragnarok has hit big.

The film opened in lots of territories around the world last week, but this past weekend it arrived in America. For its opening weekend in the US, it outgrossed Spider-Man: Homecoming with a haul of $121m and counting, a notable jump on the equivalent takings for Thor: The Dark World.

Outside of the US? The story is rosy too. A huge Chinese opening helped contribute to a non-US take now of $306m, bringing the grand total for the film to $427m. Thor also has a two week run at the box office, right up until Justice League arrives on November 17th. Warner Bros will be looking for similar numbers at the very least.

Next up for Marvel? That’ll be Black Panther, in early 2018. Expect similar box office gold to be struck…
