A big surprise? No. But nonetheless, word is coming through that Jon Watts is in talks with Sony Pictures and Marvel about directing the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The next movie is due in cinemas on July 5th 2019, and in interviews prior to the release of this summer’s webslinger flick, Watts – who directed the film – was pretty clearly interested in doing the next one. No dotted line had been signed on, though. But following the critical and commercial response to Spider-Man: Homecoming, it now looks as if Marvel and Sony are moving quickly to sign him up for the new film.
Tom Holland will, of course, return to play Spider-Man in the film, and should Watts sign on the dotted line to direct, then it’s fair to suggest he’ll also have some input once more into the screenplay as well.
