Looks like DC might have a hit on their hands in the first Shazam! trailer starring Zachary Levi

If we’re being kind we’d say the DCEU has been a bit hit and miss up until now. Wonder Woman was wonderful, Man Of Steel was alright, the less said about the rest the better.

But now at the Warner panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con the first trailer for Shazam! has arrived and it’s kind of a delight.

The footage was received very well by the audience in Hall H and in general came across as light-hearted and actually takes the piss about superhero tropes a bit too.

Asher Angel stars as young Billy Batson who’s just moved to a new foster home, where he meets fellow foster kid Freddy Freeman, played by Jack Dylan Grazer (Eddie Kaspbrak in It: Chapter One).

The two form a fast friendship and a bonded by bullying. But then a strange experience on the tube leads Billy to suddenly inherit special powers – the ability to turn into adult-sized superhero Shazam, played by Zachary Levi.

The movie is directed by David S. Sandberg who made Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation but rather than dark horror the footage made Shazam! look like a really light, fun, funny and family friendly comicbook movie. Something of a change of pace for the DCEU and one that’s much needed.

Shazam! opens in cinemas on 5 April.
